When we were looking through old photographs in the run-up to 2020 and our 150th anniversary we found this picture which we all love. It was taken during World War II, outside one of our old wine houses, The Alfred’s Head at 140 Newington Causeway, close to The Elephant & Castle. If ever a photograph symbolised the philosophy of Keep Calm and Carry On, it is this one, with the lady on her hands and knees cleaning the steps to be ready for service, while men inspect bomb damage just a few feet away.
Throughout our history, every generation has had a major challenge to overcome, not least the two World Wars. We thought that Brexit was our big challenge, but it is now clear that COVID-19 is even bigger. We are doing our best to replicate the spirit of the lady in the photograph. Our online wine shop has been very busy delivering wine up and down the country and we would like to thank so many of you for using us to stay well stocked. There is also lots of work going on behind the scenes and we have made lots of changes to the way we operate to help keep you and our teams safe.
