It was just off the Strand where it all began. Our first “wine house”, The Rising Sun, opened its doors in 1870 at a time when the area around Strand and Covent Garden was undergoing huge change. Charing Cross Railway Station was built just a few years earlier in 1864 and provided a boat train service to and from Europe, which stimulated the growth of hotels, pubs – and the opening of our wine house – in the area. Theatres prospered too and at one point the area was the home to more theatres than any other in London.
The Rising Sun is long gone, but we have retained a presence in the area to this day with The Crusting Pipe, our wine bar and restaurant just a few blocks away in the heart of bustling Covent Garden market and Champagne Charlies underneath Charing Cross station.
